Pregnancy changes a lot, but your sense of style doesn’t have to take a backseat. You don’t need a crash course in maternity fashion, just a few smart swaps, some comfy layers, and outfit formulas that flex with your body (and your mood).

This guide will help you choose bump-friendly basics that go the distance, so you can dress your bump in a way that feels great, looks like you, and takes one less thing off your plate during pregnancy.

We’ve teamed up with fashion stylist Emily Davies (@emilyjdavies) to bring you expert-backed tips on dressing your baby bump. From practical outfit formulas to smart layering and second-hand finds, this guide is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and stylish throughout your pregnancy.

Clothes that grow with you (and still feel like you)

“Prioritise fabrics with stretch. Jersey and cotton blends will move with your body as it changes.”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

The trick? Mix fitted and loose silhouettes, wear vintage jeans low and loose, layer smartly, and pick pieces that work through every trimester and beyond pregnancy, too.

Truthfully, there’s no need to buy a whole new wardrobe for nine months. Many mums are moving away from the usual stretchy pregnancy jeans and traditional maternity wear. These days, pregnancy style is about celebrating your bump and showing up as exactly who you are, with confidence and comfort in tow.

Let’s embrace the changes and dress your bump in a way that feels true, joyful, and just like you.

Layering for comfort and style

“Layering pieces from your existing wardrobe, button-down shirts, cardigans, jackets, can take a simple outfit up a notch while being easy to remove if your body temperature fluctuates.”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist.

From oversized shirts to stretchy knits, layering is your bump’s best friend. Think of it as a low-effort, high-impact styling hack:

  • A crisp oversized shirt over a crop top
  • A soft knit thrown over a slip dress
  • A slouchy blazer
  • Your partner’s jumper with buttery-soft high-waisted leggings

These pieces don’t just offer options, they give your bump room to breathe, move, and grow. Play with textures, drape, and volume to find what feels good and looks put-together.

Maternity outfit formulas that just work

“Accessorise with earrings, a great bag, a scarf, your favourite sunnies. These simple touches help you feel like yourself and elevate your look during pregnancy without buying anything new.”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

When brain fog hits and your pre-pregnancy jeans don’t fit, maternity outfit formulas can be lifesavers.

Try this: bump-hugging dress + oversized shirt + chunky slides. Or stretchy leggings + longline tee + dad blazer.

These easy combos make getting dressed (even half asleep) feel put-together. No need to overthink it, keep a few no-fail outfits on rotation, and dressing becomes one less decision before your morning cuppa.

Borrow, swap, and shop second-hand

Pregnancy is fleeting, but your style can stay fresh without breaking the bank. Second-hand shopping is a brilliant way to update your wardrobe with pieces you’ll love, minus the guilt over cost or waste.

Op shops, vintage stores, and resale apps are full of bump-friendly finds that cost a fraction of buying new. And don’t forget: swapping or borrowing clothes from friends, family, or even raiding your partner’s wardrobe can uncover some unexpected favourites.

It’s budget-friendly, kinder to the planet, and you might find styles you never thought to try before.

Pregnancy swimwear that gets the job done

Whether you’re heading to the beach or enjoying a babymoon, swimwear that fits and feels good makes soaking up the moment easier. Just because your body’s changing doesn’t mean your confidence should dip. Today’s maternity swimwear is cute and clever, think bump-flattering one-pieces with ruching, supportive bikinis with adjustable straps, and soft fabrics that move with you.

Quick tip: Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so SPF is a must. Look for mineral-based, broad-spectrum protection and remember to reapply.

Feel-good outfits for every trimester

“Look for key staple pieces that are easy to dress up or down: comfy leggings or jeans, stretchy midi dresses, and neutral layering tops and vests that go with any colour.”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Style evolves with your body, and that’s the point. These tips flex with you, from first kicks to the final countdown and beyond. Your body’s not static, so neither should your style be.

First trimester outfits

In the early days, get creative with your existing wardrobe and find ways to adapt non-maternity pieces that don’t scream pregnancy. Maybe start a Pinterest board full of style inspiration to help plan how you’ll dress your growing bump.

Second trimester outfits

Midway through? Bring in supportive, breathable fabrics like soft cotton, jersey, bamboo, or modal blends. Bump-accentuating (or baring) silhouettes let you show off your bump if you want to.

Soft, stretchy dresses can be surprisingly comfortable and confidence-boosting. Showing off your bump feels empowering, not exposing.

Third trimester outfits

Near the end, lean into comfort heroes: floaty dresses, sliders, sandals, or sneakers you can slip on easily. Oversized button-downs and longline tees worn open over dresses or layered with leggings work beautifully. They’re breathable, stylish, and perfect for that “I got dressed but barely tried” vibe. Plus, they transition smoothly into the fourth trimester.

Postpartum outfits

“Some styles carry over into postpartum, button-down shirts, stretchy fabrics, and all your accessories!”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Keep what works, ditch what doesn’t. It’s a style journey, and the fourth trimester isn’t one-size-fits-all. Learn more in our postpartum style tips guide.

You, but comfier

“Comfort is key, soft seams and lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, especially as you may feel warmer during pregnancy. Plus, a supportive, well-fitting bra and underwear for extra comfort.”

— Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Pregnancy doesn’t mean trading your individuality for elasticated everything.

Whether you’re into athleisure, androgynous layers, romantic textures, or clean minimalism, it’s all fair game. Look for comfort-led versions of your favourite styles. Prioritise softness, flexibility, and pieces that move with you. Comfort is key, but it doesn’t mean sacrificing personal style.

One non-negotiable? A great maternity bra. Support where it counts will make everything else fit and feel better. It’s the one essential worth investing in.
