Parenting a Baby with Downs Syndrome During the Pandemic: Rachel's Story

At Tommee Tippee, we've been lucky enough to support and work alongside BALTIC's lockdown-inspired 20 Babies project, and we're proud to be able to share the individual experiences of some of the parents who were involved.

Here's Rachel's story…

"I am an auntie to two nephews, so before I became pregnant with Brody, I had a rough idea of what it'd be like to have a baby, but being pregnant during the pandemic was totally different to anything I'd expected.

I wasn’t able to go out and socialise or meet other mams, and the early days with Brody were really hard.

We didn’t know that he was going to have Downs Syndrome until he was born, so once he arrived, we had to go to lots of medical appointments and because of the pandemic, only one of us was allowed to attend the appointments with him. Brody's immune system isn't as strong as other babies, so we had extra worries around COVID-19 and keeping him safe. There was a lot to learn!

Attending the 20 Babies project has given us the chance for Brody to get out of the house, and it's also been great for me and my partner Adam to socialise with other adults. The sessions are really relaxed and friendly, and they've given us a chance to reflect and talk about our experiences during the pandemic.

Brody seems to really enjoy the sessions too, and he seems to have loved things like painting and just watching the other kids play. He's more relaxed around other little ones now, and I think his fine motor skills have really improved."
