Small babies find it difficult to regulate their own body temperature, and the NHS states that “overheating can increase the risk of SIDS”, so it’s important that you make sure their sleepwear is appropriate for the temperature of their nursery.
What are tog ratings?
Tog ratings are a warmth scale. Think of them as a handy way for you to ensure that your baby is comfortable and safe as they sleep. Basically, the higher the tog rating, the warmer they will be, while a lower tog rating means that they’ll be cooler.
The pieces in our sleepwear range come in 3.5, 2.5, 1.0 and 0.2 tog…
- 3.5 Tog: Ideal for the winter months and for cold rooms below 14°C.
- 2.5 Tog: Suitable for use all year round and for room temperatures between 14-20°C.
- 1.0 Tog: Ideal for use in warmer months or in rooms with temperatures between 20-24°C.
- 0.2 Tog: Ideal for heatwaves, hot weather and very warm rooms with temperatures above 24°C.
Use the online size and tog selector on our Tommee Tippee sleepwear to make sure your little one sleeps comfortably all year round.
Simply enter your baby’s weight and the temperature of the room they sleep in, and we'll pick the right size and tog rating for you.
Remember that these are guidelines only and you should always check on your baby as they sleep to make sure they don’t overheat. It’s better for them to be cool than too hot.
The Lullaby Trust suggests feeling “your baby’s chest or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal). If your baby’s skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes.”
To make things even easier, we’ve designed our colour changing GroEgg2 room thermometer so that it coordinates with the tog ratings in our sleepwear range. This helps you know what to dress your little one in at night from one season to the next.
