Pregnancy changes a lot, but your sense of style doesn’t have to take a hit. No need for a crash course in maternity fashion. Just a few smart swaps, some cozy layers, and outfit formulas that move with your body (and your mood).

This guide is here to help you dress your bump in a way that feels good, looks like you, and takes one less thing off your to-do list during pregnancy.

We’ve teamed up with fashion stylist Emily Davies (@emilyjdavies) to bring you expert-backed tips on dressing your baby bump. From practical outfit formulas to smart layering and second-hand finds, this guide is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and stylish throughout your pregnancy.

Clothes that grow with you (and still feel like you)

“Prioritize fabrics with stretch. Jersey and cotton blends will move with your body as it changes.”

The trick? Mix fitted and loose silhouettes, wear vintage jeans low and loose, layer smartly, and choose pieces that transition through every trimester and beyond pregnancy, too.

You don’t need a whole new wardrobe for nine months. Many moms today skip the old staples like stretchy pregnancy jeans and classic maternity wear. Pregnancy style isn’t about hiding your bump, it’s about showing up as exactly who you are, confident and comfortable.

Let’s lean into the changes and dress your bump in a way that feels real, joyful, and unmistakably you.

Borrow, swap, and shop second-hand to refresh your wardrobe

Pregnancy is brief, but your style can stay fresh without breaking the bank. Shopping second-hand is a smart way to refresh your wardrobe with pieces you’ll love, without the guilt of overspending or waste.

Thrift stores, vintage shops, and resale apps are full of bump-friendly finds, stretchy dresses, oversized shirts, cozy knits, all at a fraction of the cost.

And don’t forget your circle: swap or borrow from friends, family, or even raid your partner’s closet! His pants or button-downs might just become your new favorite maternity staples.

It’s budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and a chance to try styles you might not have otherwise.

Layering for comfort and style

“Layering pieces from your existing wardrobe, button-down shirts, cardigans, jackets, can turn a simple outfit into a polished look, while being easy to put on or take off when your body temperature shifts.”

—Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

From oversized shirts to stretchy knits, layering is your bump’s best friend. Think of it as a low-effort, high-impact styling hack:

  • A crisp oversized shirt over a crop top
  • A soft knit thrown over a slip dress
  • A slouchy blazer
  • Your partner’s sweater paired with buttery-soft high-waisted leggings

These pieces don’t just add options, they give your bump room to breathe, move, and grow. Play with textures, drape, and volume to find what feels good and looks put-together.

Easy pregnancy outfit formulas that work

“Accessorize with earrings, a great bag, a scarf, your favorite sunglasses. These simple touches help you feel like yourself and elevate any pregnancy outfit, no new purchases needed.”

—Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

When your brain is foggy and your pre-pregnancy jeans are rebelling, outfit formulas can save the day.

Try this: bump-hugging dress + oversized shirt + chunky slides. Or stretchy leggings + longline tee + dad blazer.

These go-to combos make getting dressed (even half asleep) feel easy and pulled together. No fashion math required. Keep a few no-fail looks on rotation, and dressing becomes one less decision before your morning coffee.

Swimwear that supports your changing body

Whether you’re at the pool or on a babymoon, swimwear that fits and feels good makes enjoying the moment easier. Your changing body doesn’t mean your poolside confidence has to dip. Today’s maternity swimwear is cute and clever, think bump-flattering one-pieces with ruching, supportive bikinis with adjustable straps, and buttery-soft fabrics that move with you.

Quick tip: Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so wearing SPF is a must. Look for mineral-based, broad-spectrum protection and reapply often.

Feel-good outfits for every stage of pregnancy

“Look for staple pieces that are easy to mix, match, dress up, or down. Comfy leggings or jeans, a stretchy midi dress, and neutral layering tops and vests that go with anything.”

—Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Your style evolves with your body, and that’s the point. These tips flex with you, from first kicks to the final countdown and beyond. Your body isn’t static, so your style doesn’t have to be either.

First trimester style

In the early days, you can usually get by adapting non-maternity pieces from your closet that don’t scream “pregnancy.” Maybe start a Pinterest board for pregnancy style inspiration to plan how you’ll dress your growing bump.

Second trimester style

Midway through? Bring in supportive, breathable fabrics like soft cotton, jersey, bamboo, or modal blends. Choose bump-accentuating, or even bump-baring, silhouettes if you want to show off your shape.

Soft, stretchy knit dresses can be surprisingly comfortable and confidence-boosting. Showing your bump instead of hiding it can feel empowering, not exposing.

Third trimester style

As you near the end, lean into comfort heroes: flowy dresses, sliders, sandals, or slip-on sneakers. Layer oversized button-downs or longline tees over dresses, or pair with leggings. These breathable, stylish pieces create an effortless “I got dressed without trying” look, and they transition perfectly into the fourth trimester.

Postpartum style

“Remember, some styles carry over postpartum, button-down shirts, stretchy fabrics, and all your favorite accessories!”

—Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Keep what works and ditch what doesn’t. It’s a style journey, and the fourth trimester isn’t one-size-fits-all. Learn more in our postpartum style tips guide.

You, but more comfortable

“Comfort is key. Look for soft seams and lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, especially as you may feel warmer during pregnancy. Plus, a supportive, well-fitting bra and underwear make all the difference.”

—Emily Davies, Fashion Stylist

Pregnancy doesn’t mean giving up your individuality for elastic waistbands.

Whether you prefer athletic loungewear, androgynous layers, romantic textures, or clean minimalism, it’s all still on the table. Look for comfort-focused versions of what you already love. Prioritize softness, flexibility, and pieces that move with you. Comfort matters, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing your personal style.

One non-negotiable? A great maternity bra. Support where you need it most helps everything else fit and feel better. It’s the one essential worth investing in.
