Yes, it’s generally safe for a newborn to sleep with a dummy as long as it’s clean and not attached to string or a clip, which could cause strangulation or choking. 

The best way to sterilise a dummy or a soother is to use a steam or UV steriliser, you can also sterilise Tommee Tippee dummies in the microwave using a little bit of water and the sterilising case they come packaged in.

Unfortunately there’s no clear evidence that dummies or soothers can reduce the symptoms of reflux, but they may provide some comfort when used. Read our guide on how to help your baby when struggling with reflux for more advice. 

 

There’s no right or wrong answer for this one but you should introduce a dummy when you feel it will help support you and your baby. If you’re breastfeeding, midwives and health visitors would recommended waiting until your feeding is established (usually around 3-4 weeks) to make sure your baby is learning to feed effectively and also to protect your mulk supply. Every baby is different, so follow your instincts and what works best for both you and your baby.

 

They don’t directly relieve wind, but the sucking motion babies use on a dummy can help them relax and in turn make it a little easier for trapped wind to pass. However, frequent sucking could also potentially lead to your baby swallowing extra air.
