    Tips for self-care during pregnancy

Pregnancy is incredible, but it's also a big change! We get it.

We’ve written this blog to offer practical tips to help support your physical and emotional well-being, so you can feel your best and enjoy your pregnancy to the fullest.

    Finding balance: Exercise during pregnancy

Stay active with walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga. These pregnancy-friendly exercises can help improve your mood, reduce discomfort, and prepare your body for labor.

Remember to consult your doctor before starting any new routine, listen to your body, and adjust your workouts as needed.

    Prioritize rest

Getting good sleep during pregnancy can be challenging, but there are several strategies you can try.

    • Try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
    • Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
    • Sleep on your side (left is best!) with supportive pillows.
    • Stay hydrated, but cut back on fluids before bed.
    • Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or prenatal yoga.
    Lean on your support system

Pregnancy is a journey, and you don't have to go it alone. Building a strong support network – partners, family, friends, and doctors – creates a safe space to share concerns and get helpful advice, and joining local groups or prenatal classes is a great way to connect with other parents-to-be.

    Make healthy food choices

Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your diet. Stay hydrated with plenty of water. Raw or undercooked meats, fish, and shellfish (such as sushi, raw oysters, clams, and scallops); eggs; unpasteurized dairy products; and high-mercury fish are some of the foods that should be avoided during pregnancy.

    Relax and unwind

Pregnancy massages are a safe and effective way to ease discomfort such as back pain, reduce swelling, and promote relaxation. Always check with your doctor before booking, and choose a therapist certified in prenatal massage.

    Pregnancy care vitamins

Taking the right vitamins is crucial for both maternal and fetal health. Key nutrients include folic acid, iron, vitamin D, calcium, DHA, and iodine. Prenatal vitamins typically combine these, but it's a good idea to speak to your healthcare provider to ensure appropriate dosages and address your individual needs.

    Pregnancy dental care

Pregnancy hormones can make your gums more sensitive and prone to problems. So, it's really important to take good care of your teeth. Brushing and flossing daily and seeing your dentist for regular checkups are especially important during pregnancy.

    Pregnancy skincare routine

Pregnancy can change your skin! Keep it healthy by using gentle, fragrance-free products and moisturizing regularly. If you have any specific skin concerns, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor or a dermatologist. They can offer personalized advice.

    Sun protection

Sunscreen is a must during pregnancy, even on cloudy days. Hormonal changes make your skin more prone to hyperpigmentation, especially melasma, often called the ‘pregnancy mask’. Melasma shows up as dark patches on your face, like your forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. Increased estrogen and progesterone boost melanin, and sun exposure makes it worse.

Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps block UVA and UVB rays, preventing or minimizing these dark spots.

    Stretch marks

Stretch marks are super common during pregnancy, as your skin stretches to accommodate your growing baby. While genetics play a big role, good skincare can help minimize their appearance, even if you can't prevent them.

Keep your skin hydrated with moisturizers and oils containing hyaluronic acid, cocoa butter, or vitamin E to improve skin elasticity. Apply these products consistently, especially on your belly, breasts, and thighs. Gentle exfoliation can also help with cell turnover.
