  • A changing bag is an essential item that you need when leaving the house with your baby so you have everything on hand when you need to change your baby.

  • You need to make sure your changing bag has enough storage for everything you need to pack in it, is easy to keep clean, suits your style preference and is comfortable to carry.

  • Some of the most important changing bag essentials include diapers, wipes, diaper bags, a spare change of clothes, bottles and formula (if formula feeding), pacifiers, cloths and diaper rash cream.

  • To keep your changing bag organized, stick to set compartments and places for each item, fold everything neatly to help you keep track of where everything is, place everything you use the most closer to the top of the bag, and use travel sizes products (e.g. diaper cream) where you can to save space and make it lighter.

Small babies need their diaper changed up to 10 or 12 times a day, so if you’re planning to leave the house without incident, you’ll need a changing bag.

There’s endless advice out there about what you should—and shouldn’t — pack (often, everything but the kitchen sink), so it can be hard for any newborn parent to decide what they really need.

While you won’t need to drag a suitcase around every time you pop to the shops, there are a few changing bag essentials you’ll need to take to make the trip enjoyable for you (and your baby). If you’re struggling to decide, we’ve got you covered as we dig into whether a changing bag is needed and what exactly should be in it.

Do I need a baby changing bag?

Yes, having a baby changing bag is an essential item for when you’re out of the house. Taking a changing bag with you whenever you leave the house means you’re fully prepared for when your baby needs a diaper change, making your life much easier and trips out of the house much more enjoyable.

You can technically use any bag to hold your change time essentials. However, specially designed changing bags are durable, easy to carry, and give you all the space you need to keep organised, with everything in one place.

What to look for in a changing bag

Getting the right changing bag is key to make sure it has enough space and compartments that you need. Here are a few things you might want to consider before deciding which baby bag you go for:

  • Does it have bottle storage? Built-in and insulated bottle compartments will keep expressed or formula milk at the right temperature ready for the next time they’re ready for a feed when you’re out and about.

  • Does it come with a built-in changing mat? A detachable changing mat means you can comfortably change your baby’s diaper anytime, anywhere. A true lifesaver! If you can’t find a bag with a built-in changing mat, foldable alternatives won’t take up too much room.

  • Does it have a dirty diaper compartment? If you can’t throw away dirty diapers immediately (believe us, it happens), you’ll want to keep them separate from their clean clothes and other essentials.

  • Is it easy to clean? Bags made from washable, wipe-clean fabrics make those (inevitable) messy moments much easier to handle.

  • Are there plenty of pockets? Who doesn’t love pockets? For parents on-the-go, diaper changes need to be fast and fuss-free. We particularly love bags with see-through mesh pockets and a light-coloured interior, so we can reach for all our bits and bobs in a flash.

  • Does it suit your style? Consider not only the style, shape, colour and fabric, but whether the bag will feel comfortable for you to carry. Lots of changing bags can be worn multiple ways, come with adjustable, detachable, and padded straps for comfort, or have clips that can be attached to your stroller.

Baby changing bag essentials

Let's run through what you'll need to pack in your baby's changing bag so you're ready to pop on a fresh diaper, whenever, wherever.

  • A baby care kit: Perfect for popping in your changing bag, a baby healthcare kit contains essential items to look after your baby at home or on the go.
  • A spare outfit for baby: Carrying a spare outfit for your little one means that you've always got something to change them into should an accident happen.
  • Bottles and a bottle warmer: If you're bottle feeding your baby, it's important that you can take a feed out with you and that you're able to warm their feed to the perfect temperature.
  • Breast pads: Keeping a few breast pads in your changing bag can help to absorb any unexpected leaks if you're breastfeeding.
  • Comforters: Trust us, if your tiny tot relies on pacifiers for comfort, you'll thank yourself later for packing lots of pacifiers in your changing bag. A small soft toy can also help to turn sobs into smiles while you're on the go.
  • Essentials for you: We're talking things that aren't directly baby-related - lip balm, hand cream, a bottle of warmer, a reusable coffee cup, and some tasty on-the-go snacks! If you've got enough space, it's a good idea to carry a spare top to change into if an innocent baby burp turns into something worse.
  • Hand sanitizer: Keep germs at bay and pack some good-quality hand sanitizer in your baby changing bag to use when you don't have access to a sink.
  • Muslin squares: One of the most versatile baby-care items, muslin cloths are lightweight and compact. They can be used to mop up spills, wipe away dribble after a feed, as a nursing cover when breastfeeding, or as a sunshade on hot days.
  • Diapers: This one speaks for itself. It's a good idea to keep between four and six extra diapers in your changing bag, depending on how long you'll be out and about for.
  • Diaper cream: Packing a small tub or tube of diaper rash cream will help keep your little one comfortable when you're away from home.
  • Diaper bags: Once you've changed your baby's diaper, you'll need to clean up any mess, and disposable diaper sacks will certainly come in handy.
  • Sunscreen: This one's particularly important during the summer but carrying a travel-sized tube of SPF and a lightweight sun hat in your changing bag means your little one is always protected from the sun.
  • Teething gel: If your baby is teething, popping a small tube of teething gel in your changing bag means that you can help soothe their sore gums when you're out and about.
  • Wipes: Baby wipes are not just for change time! They can also be used to clean sticky fingers and to mop up any accidental spills.

Changing bag essentials for short outings vs long trips

Okay so you might not need to carry everything with you if popping out of the house briefly (or at least not as much of everything), but it’s still important to be prepared for any accidents that may happen.

For longer trips out of the house you’ll want everything we’ve mentioned above, but if you’re on a brief shorter trip, it might be handy to have a smaller bag that contains:

  • 2-3 diapers

  • Travel-size wipes

  • Diaper bags

  • Foldable changing mat

  • 1 spare outfit

  • Pacifier

  • Bottle if they’re due a feed during that time

How to organize your diaper bag

  1. Take note of your changing bag’s contents and assign each item a designated pocket/compartment/place.
  2. Using mini, refillable, travel-sized products will help to save space in your changing bag (and make it lighter to carry).
  3. Folding your baby’s blankets, changing mat, spare clothes and diapers (think, documents in a filing cabinet), will help you keep track of where everything is.
  4. Place the items you’ll reach for most in pockets (for easy access), those bits and bobs you’ll use rarely are fine at the bottom of your bag.
