Giving Birth and Raising a Baby During the Pandemic: Sam's Story
At Tommee Tippee, we've been lucky enough to support and work alongside BALTIC's lockdown-inspired 20 Babies project, and we're proud to be able to share the individual experiences of some of the parents who were involved.
Here's Sam's story…
"When I first found out I was pregnant the pandemic hadn’t started yet so I thought that my Nana and partner were going to be able to come to all my appointments with me. But when the time came, I had to attend my appointments and growth scans by myself. I was nervous and it was awful because you're supposed to be able to share happy moments like that with your loved ones.
When I went into the hospital to give birth, I had to get an induction to start things off and I was on my own all day until I went into full labour. It was only then that Scott's dad was finally able to be in the room with me. The midwives were lovely and one of them sat with me all day and held my hand, but I don’t think I would've been able to get through the delivery if it wasn’t for his dad.
Because of the lockdown restrictions, Scott was a couple of months old before he actually got to meet his grandma and grandad in person for the first time. He was still tiny, but I would have liked them to have seen him as a newborn, meeting a baby over FaceTime just isn't the same as getting to cuddle them in real life!
The 20 Babies group has given Scott a chance to meet and play with other little ones, and I've loved being able to chat with other parents and get to know the other mums. Scott was very clingy when we first started coming and he would never leave my side, but he's become a lot more sociable, and I think the project has really helped!
The sessions have helped me reflect and shown me that everyone has been through the same thing, it makes you realise how hard everything really was during the pandemic."
