Baby sleepbags are a great way to keep your baby safe and comfortable as they sleep. They're available in a range of sizes and tog ratings for different ages and seasons.

Read on to learn all about Tommee Tippee baby sleepbags, and discover which type is right for your baby.

What are the benefits of using a baby sleeping bag?

Lots of parents choose to dress their baby in a sleeping bag instead of using blankets or sheets which can pose a risk of suffocation and overheating. If you do use a lightweight blanket, make sure it's not tucked in higher than their shoulders and that they're in the "feet to foot" position, with their feet at the end of their cot or Moses basket.

Sleeping bags are like wearable blankets for babies that keep them comfortable and at a safe temperature as they sleep. They are safer for babies, because there's no need for duvets or loose blankets, so their head remains safely uncovered, reducing the risk of suffocation.

The other benefits of baby sleeping bags include...

  • They help baby to stay at a constant temperature.
  • Your baby can move around in the bag but still stay covered and cosy.
  • They're convenient for night feeds.
  • They mean that there's no need for additional covers that baby could kick off or get tangled up in.
  • They promote good sleep and become a recognisable part of your baby's bedtime routine.

Are baby sleeping bags safe?

Yes, Tommee Tippee baby sleep bags are tested and approved to adhere to British and European safety standards. They’re made using fabrics and trims that are OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, meaning they are free from harmful substances.

According to the NHS, baby sleeping bags can help reduce the risk of SIDS, as they prevent babies from wriggling underneath their bedding. Click here to read more about safe sleep for babies.

Generally, the warmer a room is, the less your baby needs to wear under their sleeping bag. Remember that all babies are different, and you'll soon learn what your baby is comfortable in.

Your baby shouldn't become too warm in their sleeping bag, as long as you choose the correct tog for the room's temperature and they're not wearing too many layers underneath it.

If you can, choose a sleep bag with no sleeves or detachable sleeves, and don't use any clothes or bedding that your baby could get tangled up in.

Consider removing or adding layers of your baby’s clothing during sleep depending on whether they seem too hot or too cold. Remember, they should be cooler rather than too hot.

Signs a baby is too hot can include them...

  • Feeling hot or sweaty to touch on their tummy, neck or back
  • Having damp hair
  • Flushing in the cheeks
  • Increasing their breathing rate

The Lullaby Trust recommends feeling your baby's chest or the back of their neck to monitor their temperature (their hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal).

If your baby's skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes.

You can use our baby sleeping bag tog guide to help you dress your baby safely for bed.

The amount of sleep bags you need depends on your baby and how often you need to wash their sleepwear! But as a general rule, stocking up with three of each style (either swaddle bag or sleep bag) will mean that you’ve always got one in the wash, one to wear, and one to spare.

The temperature of the room your baby sleeps in will influence the tog that's required.

Here's a breakdown of which tog should be worn when...

Sleep Bag Tog  Room Temperature
3.5 Tog  Designed for winter months and cold rooms below 16°C.
2.5 Tog  Designed for year-round use and room temperatures between 16-20°C.
1.0 Tog  Designed for warm summer months and room temperatures between 20-24°C.
0.2 Tog  Designed for heatwaves, hot weather, and very warm room temperatures above 24°C.

To see you from one season to the next, you might want a few sleepbags in different togs for each season, or a middle-of-the-road bag like our All-Season Sleepbag to cover year-round wear.

Your baby's head shouldn't be able to pass through the neck hole when their sleepbag is fastened. If it can, the sleepbag is too big for them. Remember to check the weight of your child and refer to the chart below.

Remember, these are recommendations only as all babies are different...

If your baby doesn't wear a sleepbag to sleep in, you should dress them in lightweight sleepwear suitable for their age.

If you use sheets and/or blankets they should be lightweight and not weighted, thick, fleecy or padded.

You should position your baby in the feet-to-foot position with their feet at the bottom of the cot, and firmly tuck in any sheets or blankets, no higher than their shoulders, helps to avoid the risk of your baby’s head becoming covered.

If you think your baby is cold, add an extra lightweight blanket or layer of clothing.

Baby & Toddler Sleepwear

Three-stage baby sleepwear

At Tommee Tippee, our sleepwear range comes in three parts, and is either made using super soft cotton or a premium mix of bamboo fibres, cotton and ALOEKIND™.

Stage 1: Swaddle Bag

Available in 0-3 and 3-6 months, our newborn-friendly Swaddle Bag keeps your baby's arms tucked into their body as they sleep, helping them to feel safe and secure, just like they did in the womb! Swaddling reduces their startle reflex and prevents wakeups caused by wriggly arms. It also maintains a safe sleep temperature, so there's no need for blankets or sheets.

Getting your baby settled in their Swaddle Bag is easy. Open the zip from top-to-bottom, gently tuck in your baby's arms and fasten the zip from the top down around their feet. Your baby can be swaddled with their arms in, or you can let one, or both arms out to stretch when they're almost ready to transition to a Sleepbag.

When they need their nappy changed, just unzip the Swaddle Bag from the bottom for a fuss-free fresh nappy that won't disturb your baby.

Stage 2: Sleep Bag

Available in 6-18 and 18-36 months, our Sleep Bag makes the transition from swaddle to sleep suit super easy. It's made using the same premium fabrics that are kind to your baby's delicate skin and opens top-to-bottom (starting near their chin and finishing at their toes) to avoid irritation and mid-night escape missions!

Tommee Tippee Sleep Bags open flat, so you can just gently pop baby's arms through the holes so they can stretch out, while a signature Snugfit™ design promotes a 'frog-legged' sleeping position that supports healthy hip development as your baby grows.

Again, like the Swaddle Bag, our Sleep Bag unzips from the bottom for a nappy change that your baby will hardly notice!

Stage 3: Steppee

We know how it goes, one moment you're eagerly waiting for them to learn how to crawl, the next they're toddling around the house like a seasoned pro!

Our Steppee is made for children aged 6-36 months, and helps to make playtime and adventures before bed and in the morning a breeze. Just pop in both feet, then both arms, and zip down from their chin to their toes to get set for sleep time.

Nurturing your toddler's independence and encouraging them to jump, explore, and play when they're not snoozing, it has snug openings for their feet and fold-over foot covers with grippy, no-slip soles that are perfect for the chillier months of the year.
